CENTRE FOR HEART LUNG INNOVATION AT ST. PAUL’S HOSPITAL

Biomedical Research Intern

My passion for biomedical science began long before stepping into a professional laboratory. Early hands-on experiences, such as participating in the SHAD STEM Program, allowed me to design and conduct exploratory experiments, observe cells under microscopes, prepare and stain tissue samples, and even perform frog dissections. These exercises taught me the importance of controlling variables, designing experiments carefully, and analyzing data critically, while cultivating precision, patience, and problem-solving skills.

Building on this foundation, I participated in a specialized research program at the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation at St. Paul’s Hospital, where I collaborated with professional researchers in tissue and molecular analyses and observed how scientific discoveries translate into patient care. This experience deepened my appreciation for interdisciplinary teamwork and strengthened my commitment to transforming research into meaningful healthcare outcomes.

Together, these experiences shaped my vision for the future: to integrate research, innovation, and patient-centered care. I aspire to become a dentist and biomedical researcher, bridging laboratory science with clinical practice to advance oral health and its positive impact on overall well-being.

SHAD CANADA STEM PROGRAM

STEM LABORATORY EXPERIENCE

In July, I participated in the SHAD STEM Program, a summer immersion designed for students passionate about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. A major highlight of the program was the laboratory component, which allowed me to design and conduct exploratory experiments while learning foundational techniques and research methods in the life sciences.

In the lab, I used microscopes to observe cells, prepared and stained tissue samples, and learned to analyze the structure and function of biological materials at the microscopic level. I also participated in a frog dissection, which helped me gain a more intuitive understanding of the organism’s macroscopic structures and system interactions. During the course, I conducted small-scale exploratory experiments, such as comparing the effects of different staining methods on tissue visualization, while meticulously recording experimental procedures and observations. These exercises deepened my understanding of the importance of controlling variables, designing experiments, and interpreting data in scientific research.

Throughout the experiments, I encountered several challenges, including handling delicate samples, performing accurate dissections, and extracting meaningful data from microscopic observations. Through repeated practice, observing instructors, seeking guidance, and collaborating with peers, I gradually improved my technical skills while developing critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving abilities.

This experience not only strengthened my research skills and methodology but also further ignited my passion for biomedical research and medical innovation. I have applied the techniques and insights gained to subsequent research projects, laying a solid foundation for engaging in more advanced scientific investigations in the future.
